Post subject:  Give Your Mirage Drive Some Balls!

One thing that I have found pretty annoying once I removed the straps on my Mirage Drive pedals, is that at least one of the pedals is often facing backwards at the wrong time. This means that I am often kicking at the pedal to get it oriented properly, while at the same time I might be trying to troll, or pull up my anchor, or sail. To solve this problem I added a couple of fishing weights to the underside of each pedal so that the pedal will be ready when I am.

After experimenting a bit, I found that the 2 or 3 oz. weights on each pedal were enough to do the trick. I used some 80 lb. steel leader material, looped through crimped sleeves at each end, and attached to the back of the pedals with some SS self-tapping screws. I had to put the screws in at somewhat of an angle to avoid them coming thru the front of the pedal, but no big ting.

My pedals came on an early 2004 model Outback. An acquaintance with a later model Outback has a different pedal design with a more waffle-like, compartmentalized backside. After seeing my design, he was able simply to use a flatter weight, add some Marine Goop to the outermost compartment, and then press the weight into the goop. So far, it seems to be holding, but if it should come loose you can always add a SS screw or two to secure it, I would think.

Thanks for sharing your great idea. That should cure my hassle of pedal flipping to get the foot inserted quickly.

Old Salt: Many thanks for the easy pedal solution. I am 79,overweeight and don't bend so good any more. I will have a look at my pedals to see which method to use. Loon

This is a great mod. Nate from OEX did this to his Revo last year and I smacked my head (Shoulda had a V8) - so simple! This should be considered at the factory level.

Great idea! It will be a short step from they way you did it, to boring a hole thru the weight & screwing it drectly to the pedal - which is what I'm gonna do next Weekend.
