We recently purchased a new 2008 i14 and are very pleased with it. I'm thinking of changing one of the drives to ST Turbo fins. Since the drives are new would trying to sell one and buying a new V2 with ST Turbos already part of it be a better move or would doing the upgrade and adding the screw-in mast sprocket to my existing drive be the best deal? I have no idea if a reasonable after market exists for these old style Mirage Drives now that the V2's are out? Any ideas/offers would be appreciated

your probably going to come out better upgrading yourself. easy to do and you will learn something about the drive doing the work!

I agree with sunjammers ...providing your old drive isn't a basket case of worn parts.

I have V2 parts on order for my older drive. Somebody (Roadrunner?!) on this forum shares how to upgrade everything on the old drives to V2, though I'm only upgrading the cams and mast stems this time around. Which ever way you go, upgrading with V2 parts costs much less money than buying a new V2 drive (by hundreds of dollars). As you check through the Hobie parts catalog, pay careful attention to some of the V2 "kits" Hobie offers. Depending on the kit and part combinations, you cans save even more money.

I'd like to see Hobie come up with a complete V1 to V2 drive kit at a great discounted price, but they haven't done this yet. Oh, and be sure to go to Turbo fins in the process.

Putting these drives together can be a bit intimidating for a non-mechanic guy such as I, but I found it was not too hard to do IF you, for instance, mark the drive chain centers with a magic marker BEFORE you take it apart. Again, do a search on this forum. There are some really great and detailed "how to's" that have been posted regarding drives and fins.

Read them well, buy the parts, then take a deep breath and start unbolting. If you end up with spaghetti, you can always take the mess to your nearest Hobie dealer and have them put it back together. Me? I've done it 3 times already. And I get nervous fixing door knobs.
