I wrote an article on wheelcart types and suitability a week or so ago at yakass.net. Maybe someone here will find it informative.

Josh,
What Roadrunner said!
I like your collar spacer idea. 8)
A point of contention though. I regard the Trax2 cart frame as being the toughest, most reliable cart as it has a wider, more stable solid axle as opposed to a hollow axle on the new HD cart. Also the clips on the new HD cart are easily dislodged and lost.
The Trax 2 cart is cheaper and the money you save can be put towards adding the HD wheels.
Fitted with the heavy duty wheels as detailed above you have the choice to easily swap back to the balloon wheels depending on the terrain.
IMO it is the best cart option! :)

I just recently purchased a HD cart with the plastic collars. I figured they would be fine but after seeing the double tennis ball trick I will be going that route. The shock absorber analogy was the convincing point.

thanks

Just wanted to update this thread. As I've promised in another thread, I've created a pretty extensive (photo rich) trip report of my Slate Islands (Lake Superior) experience with the Hobie Adventures from August of last year in the "Places To Kayak" section. We all had a fantastic time. So much so - that we are leaving to do it all again in a couple of weeks. It's just unreal out there.

Here is the Slate Islands trip report.

Here are a few photos from the trip:

I also ended up purchasing a kayak/canoe cart. This is the one:

I was planning on using it to complete the Part II section of a new White Otter Castle trip last year - that involves crossing 15 rough and remote portages - but my adventure buddy had to back out at the last minute - so the trip was scrapped. I still hope to one day complete the trip.

Hi everyone - I've now used the WCK Expedition canoe cart with the Hobies and I have to say that it worked very well. We had no issues at all so things worked better than expected. There were some areas of the portage that were relatively rough and uneven and the Hobie Adventures stayed firmly planted to the cart. We even used the cart with the canoe and despite (by my best guess) overloading the cart, it took everything in stride.

I've updated my original White Otter Castle trip report with a new trip report completed just last week called "Part I - Seven Years Later: The Return to White Otter Castle" that includes photos of the cart carrying one of the Adventures.

You can scroll down from this link to find the updated trip report. I've just completed Part II and hope to have Part III completed some time next week.
