Post subject:  How to repair a dented hull?

I have a new Hobie Mirage tandem that arrived with a badly dented hull. The dent is too far in to be able to get to it from within a hatch. The dealer I bought it from said to just leave it in the sun and the dent would pop out. Well, that hasn't happened. Any ideas on how I can get this dent out of my hull?

Why would you accept a dented yak in the first place. I would go back to the dealer and let them worry about it. Unless you got a wicked deal on it or something.....

The yak was shipped from Florida (I'm in CA) and I wasn't here when it arrived. The dealer has been very nice and I was hoping just to repair the dent instead of dealing with hassling both of us with returning the yak. Thus my post to the board in hopes of getting help.

You could leave it out in the sun, maybe use a portable heater to heat up the dent to make it more pliable, see if that will do it. You can seal the hatches and hull openings with duct tape, then pump some air in the hull with a shop vac, bicycle pump or air compressor to push the dent out with air pressure.
However, I would agree with the first response to your question; if the kayak is new and arrived in that condition, I would let the dealer or factory handle it. Hobie is a pretty good company as far as customer service goes, I'm sure they would take care of you.

So... we built it in California, shipped it to Florida and they shipped it back to you here? The shipping companies love it! :)

Try air pressure in the hull. Lay black plastic over the dented area while in the sun to heat it more.

Normally freight damage is not a factory issue. It is a freight company or dealer storage issue once in their hands. There is no real saying where this happened.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I appreciate all of your help. One question...if I seal off the hatches, where do I put a pump? Is there another opening that I don't know about? (This may sound like a smart-ass question, but I'm serious.) :?:
If I can't get the dent out, I will take your advice and look into sending the boat back to FL (so they can ship it back to Hobie in CA) and all the shipping companies can benefit.

Use the drain hole. You only need a little pressure. No need to seal the hatches. They can leak a little. Just keep the air coming.
