Took photo hope this works. I can see that the overlap is actually reinforcing added by hobie.

Is this usual? I have just taken delivery of my outback here in the UK and have inspected it thoroughly. I have found that at the front of the drive slot , the finish is not smooth like the back of the slot. Is this something to do with improvements to strenghten this point?. Inside the kayak again at the front of the slot, there is an overlap of the top half of the kayak. Also the two grooves where the pegs go under the twist knob are also rough to the touch. I hope this is normal with a new kayak and that I have not bought a refurbished/ repaired model? Hope someone can put my mind at rest as I know this was a problem area. |

We have been making changes to the molds and trimming procedures. It is tough to say what is current production as these changes have been ongoing. One of the things they did was to dish out a little of the drive slot (under the knobs), now they have raised the area slightly just ahead of the recess. |

Mark, I can't answer your question about the rough edges but I can offer you some information. Your Kayak is rotomolded. There is no top half and bottom half to overlap. it is one piece. The line around the kayak is the parting line of the mold, not a seam where two halves were joined together. The plastic under the line is continuous. Next, on my Quest, the top of the hull is somewhat rough. It cuts reflections (glare) and provides friction (less sliding) for whatever I want to put on it. Some of the roughness in the drive area might be an attempt to provide friction (grip?) for the attachment system to lessen movement. The rough edges? I do not know. My Adventure has not come in yet but I will see if this is the case when it does. Maybe Matt can help here. |

Reinforcement. This is a fill of polyethelyene from a welding gun. These boats were shipped while we were making many changes. To be sure that the area was bullet proof because they were headed over seas, they injected material with a feed type welding gun. Should be super strong. The exterior would have been trimmed. This was insurance against the area having a leak problem we had been fighting. |

Thanks for the reply Matt. It is reassuring to know that Hobie is continuing to address this issue and hopefully will have a product with zero quality issues. One other thing I have noticed is on the underside of the hull, either side of the drive slot are bulges in the plastic. This is where the locking knob bolt molds are attached to the hull. They are very noticeable when you look along the hull profile and can be felt easily when you run a hand over. Are all mirage kayaks like this? Hope these pictures help.

Bumps. Deformations are expected. This is an area where the plastic from the knob lock area bridges (attaches) to the bottom of the hull... for strength. When the boat cools it shrinks and causes some things like this. |

I too have recently recieved my new outback here in the UK. I had the the same observation regarding the hull bumps and am reassured to hear that bumps are 'normal'. |

six months ago Hobie was nice enough to replace my Outback due to a leak...The new and improved hull has not taken on any water..except when waves come over the rear portion were the rigging lines are...that I expect...but in the bays or lakes the inside of my hull is 100% dry...and as for the rough edges & bulges I have them also...doesn't hurt the performance of it..and it don't matter when yer fighting a fish!!! |
