I have recently recieved my new outback here in the UK. I am generally very pleased with it and looking forward to spending time on the water. The major concern though is the amount of water taken on board - which is why Ive logged onto the forum today. A couple of trips out on the water so far (on flat water with no spray or wash) have resulted in approx 6 pints of water in the hull over a 3 hour period. I have read in these forums that there have been some problems with the leaks around the mirage drive and attempts to fix them. I will go and do some testing to try and establish the cause. |

I will be keeping an eye on this one myself. I have had my yak for about a month but due to inclement weather and work committments, I have not had chance to put to water yet. Hopefully when I do the outback will be dry. I will post findings of my first outing, maybe a mini uk review |

I took my Sport out about two weeks ago on to a local lake. I was out for around two hours. When I checked for water ingress there was only about half a cup full. I had the sail up but there was only a light breeze but it handled realy well. I am looking forward to the better weather. |

I had thought about possible causes of leaks. If you were carrying a lot of weight on the back of the Yak the holes for your rudder lines may have been below the water line and you would take in water. Worth a look? |

The steering cables may be an issue is the transom is under water or there is a following sea. Check the tubes inside the hull. Maybe try to support them inside to keep them high. |

Hi, Just seen your post on this site. I've had my Hobie outback since September 05. Been out about 10 times and have been lucky with the water (or lack of it) I do get a few drops after a day at sea, but I've got a car sponge that soaks it all up and stops it 'sloshing' around. I've seen a few of the Hobie owners on Kayak Fishing Stuff .com have added foam swimming pool floats to keep the rudder lines up. It also adds additional flotation as a benefit. It would be good to hear how you are modifying your yaks, as there aren't many of us in the UK yet. Good luck, you'll really love it. Dave |

Thank you for your various comments gents. Ive now had a chance to check things out more precisely. The amount of water leaking into the hull on a calm day measures 6 litres in a 4 hour period. As you can imagine this impairs handling and limits the amount of time that can be safely spent on the water. Today I air tested the hull (air bed inflator and soapy water). 4 leaks were found as follows:- a. 2 leaks around the hatches - but no more than you might expect. b. 1 leak around the carrying handle - doesn't appear significant to me. c. A leak around the mirage drive slot - via 3 no holes the size of nail holes. Quite a bit of air wizzing out of these. All other areas were surprisingly air tight. I would be grateful if Hobie could confirm how to proceed in order to get this rectified under the warranty. I have taken some photos and video which maybe of some help. Regards Shaun [img] |

Thank you for your reply Mike. The location of the leak is a difficult to describe. It can be clearly seen from the photos. I do not have a facility for linking the photos to this forum reply, so I will email them to you, along with the video clips. I'll have a go at describing the location:- There three small holes at the front of the drive slot, on the vertical face, a few millimetres up from the underside of the hull. |
