22 mags are very powerful and until recently you could not get semi auto 22 mag weapons.

Grampa Spey, I like it, I've been liking it, I've been waiting (and waiting...) for Keltec to begin reliable production in sufficient quantities as to be able to not have to wait over a year on the waiting list. The PM-30 ia a rare bird to come by!

But, you're right, the .22WMR should not be discounted as a self-defense cartridge. Though I don't own one, I'm currently loving the "NAA Sheriff":

Small, light, useful for signaling, twice the energy in Magnum over the .22LR, can fire FMJ, HP and "snake loads".

I carry a Taurus PT145 in a watertight hard box. I keep it easily accessible (on my right side) lashed to my kayak.

Unfortunately, I have faced off with a couple bad guys. I'm glad I wasn't shot at and didn't have to fire...

I served in the military 11 years, was a firearms instructor and am licensed for CCW.

I don't go looking for trouble and steer clear when given the opportunity.

When I lived in an appartment (a long time ago) I heard a woman screaming from the parking area in front of my appartment at about 2:00am. I grabbed a pistol and went to see what was going on. As I rounded the steps, I saw a man struggling with a woman on the ground. He had torn off her dress and ripped open her blouse. I had just interrupted a rape. I yelled at the man that I had a pistol. The guy was armed with a knife, but got up and ran away. I didn't give chase, I just helpped the woman up and escorted her to her appartment (2 doors down from mine). She was very shaken as we waited for thepolice to arrive. It took about 6-7 minutes after the call, but it seemed like an eternity. She couldn't give a good description of the man, so he got away. My wife (at the time) and I let the woman sleep on our couch that night. the following day, she bought a pistol and went to the range with me. She took some classes and got her CHL. She would have very likely been raped if someone didn't have a weapon to help her out.

If that young lady had been your wife, girlfriend, daughter or any woman you cared about, would you want someone to help her and intervene?

She decided she wasn't going to be a victim...

Another time (about 6-7 years later) my 6 month old son was in his car seat and I was driving. We stopped to meet with my sister-in-law, so she could follow me. While waiting in the car, a crack head decided he wanted my car and money, so he tried to break my window with a knife. I leveled the sights of my carry weapon at him. He may have been stoned, but he knew enough to turn and run. I called the police and gave them a description, but I never heard if they found him.

Needless to say, I know if I need police, they will be at least 5 minutes away...
I can choose to care for me and my family or not...

I choose to care for them.

I respect the decisions of you who choose not to own or carry a firearm.
I will not try to convince you that you will be a victim, or that you should protect yourself and family.

Please don't try to infringe on my right to make that choice for my family.

I've been carrying since it was legal to do so in Texas. I carried openly in Arizona and Colorado (when I lived there). To this day, outside of Military service, I have not fired my weapon at anyone, no matter how mad, scared or upset I was. I try to avoid areas where I know I might encounter someone hostile (bars and such), but you never know when bad things are about to happen.
If I ever have the opportunity to meet any of you on this board, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't know I was carrying (except that I mentioned it above).

God Bless,
Doc S

Texas, CHL, I carry Glock 22 in my Adventure EVERYWHERE. Have for years. I kayak a lot at night. Nice to have as you walk back up a dark deserted boat ramp at 2am :) Polymer seems best choice to me.

So... At last I found and picked up the Keltec PMR-30 the other week and have been out shooting it a couple of times; my initial impression is that it has a lot of firepower when combined with the capacity, the polymer frame and components should make for some corrosion resistance, but I am still "breaking in" this piece and it would not be my first choice at this time. I have yet to try feeding shot loads but, due to my break in experiences, have my doubts they will perform well when cycling. Next on my list, find some feathers of the Winged Pegasus! 8)

Largely due to the replies in this thread, my personal choice for "guns for kayaking" has shifted from "camp gun" to far more personal protection use, which is no coincidence, due to the nature of the original article that started my questions: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=30551

My pick is favoring the Glock G26, a sub-compact 9mm, with stainless spring upgrade per RPB's suggestions on pg. 2.

I very much appriciate everyone's input! ...regardless of agenda!

I am puzzled by this thread - perhaps we do things differently down here in NZ... as far as I am aware nobody uses guns for kayaking here - we mostly use paddles, though mirage drives are beginning to catch on.

Anyway if you would like to come and have a look you'd be most welcome but you will have to leave your weapons at reception. :P

Stobbo I guess its because we don't have bears, alligators, snakes and other varmits hanging around  Mind you I was on Lake Okataina recently and heard 2 shots from a high calibre rifle. A guy turned up at the ramp with a nice 8 point deer slung over the bow of his boat - impressed the hell out of the Ozzie tourist who had been admiring my trout.

Back to the .44 Mag!

Cases of rabid mountain lions are rare, say officials.
A mountain lion that ran through a group of campers and attacked their dog before being killed by a member of the group has tested positive for rabies.
The incident occurred Friday, May 4, in a remote area of the Tonto National Forest just downstream of Sheep Bridge along the Verde River, near the junction with Bloody Basin Road.

The group of four was having breakfast in their camp at 6:30 a.m. when a mountain lion ran out of the bushes and attacked their dog, a 90-pound pit bull and Labrador retriever mix.

As the fight between the mountain lion and dog moved from the camp area into some nearby bushes, the owner went to his dog’s defense and hit the lion over the head with a cast iron skillet. Another member of the group then shot the lion in the head with a pistol. (edit - bold mine)

A member of the group was able to contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department via cell phone. A wildlife officer was dispatched to the scene, conducted interviews, and picked up the mountain lion carcass for transport to the Arizona State Health Laboratory for disease testing. While the young female lion appeared healthy, the lab confirmed yesterday that the lion was rabid.

The dog received multiple puncture wounds and scratches that were not life threatening. It was reportedly current on its vaccinations, but will be placed under quarantine for a set period of time as a precaution. None of the people in the group were bitten or scratched by the mountain lion. “Documented incidents of rabies in mountain lions are rare,” said Anne Justice-Allen, DVM, wildlife health specialist for Arizona Game and Fish.

Records from the Arizona Department of Health Services show that this is only the third lab-confirmed case of rabies in a mountain lion in Arizona in the past 10 years. Still, officials advise people to be aware of their surroundings and nearby wildlife activity when recreating outdoors, to keep their distance from wildlife and make sure their pets are vaccinated.

In Arizona, the wildlife in which rabies most commonly occurs are bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can contract the disease. This year 11 animals—six skunks, three bats, one fox, and now, one mountain lion—have tested positive for rabies at the Arizona State Health Laboratory.
“People need to pack up a good dose of common sense when they head out into the outdoors,” (edit - bold mine) says Will Humble, ADHS Director. “If a wild animal is coming around, stay away from it. Chances are good it is sick or rabid. If you are hurt or exposed, you should get medical attention right away. If the animal has or had rabies, people can’t wait to start showing symptoms.”

Rabies is a disease that affects the nervous system and is transmitted through the saliva of the host. Exposure often occurs via a bite but may take other avenues. It is not unusual to have multiple cases of rabies occur in an area depending on the strain of rabies involved. Rabid animals may show unusual behavior such as being bold or appearing unstable with awkward movements. Rabid carnivores, such as skunks, foxes, bobcats and coyotes, may become aggressive and attempt to bite people, pets and livestock. Wild animals exhibiting unusual behavior should be reported to the Arizona Game and Fish Department or local animal control officials.

Examples of unusual behavior include: wild animals that show no fear of people and pets; nocturnal animals that are active during daylight hours; and bats found on the ground, in swimming pools or that have been caught by a pet. Aggressive behavior such as unprovoked attacks on either pets or people may also indicate an animal is rabid.

This is why we worry.

Outside of America, it's just a different culture. Some people, like the police officer from Michigan, simply do not understand that.

I have to agree. Outside of the United States, rape and murder is statistically negligible.
