Post subject:  kayak transport

I've had a Sport for the better part of a year and, to date, have transported it inside my 1984 VW camper. This summer I'm taking it up to Wisconsin on top of my Subaru Outback. The Subaru does have a roof rack and I'll pad the crossbars in some way and I'm sure I can get it tied down properly. My concern is that the rudder will flap back around for 1200 miles and that the lines will be damaged as a result. Can someone tell me what I should do to stabilize the rudder while enroute? I'm hoping you're not going to suggest I remove the rudder... it wasn't the easiest thing for me to install when I first got the kayak, and I'm hoping I won't have to do that.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Nanc,

Welcome to the forum! On my Classic (similar rudder style) I transported it upside down, bow forward, with the rudder in the down position (sticking up). It never flapped around at all. But to be extra safe, you could take a couple of turns around it with some good packing tape and tape it in position to the hull. 8)

we always put the rudders in the down position for transport when possible, they are much less likely to flop around.

Thanks,

Thanks guys. I guess I'll trust you that the rudder won't flap around too much if I put it in the down position. I'll still worry about it, but hopefully it will be fine when I get there.
