Post subject:  inflatable life preserver
does anyone know of an inflatable pfd that can be inflated to go under the armpits and around the chest and back? something that would inflate to be like a ring life buoy but can be worn.
i had a blowover while sailing my adventure yesterday. i pulled the lanyard on my inflatable vest after my second unsuccessful attempt to remount and was nearly choked by the dadgum thing. it got a lot tighter than expected around my neck especially my throat. maybe 36lbs of buoyancy is too much?
for now i'll go back to wearing my type 3 pfd, maybe i'll keep the inflatable one as a life raft or somehow figure a way to use it to help remount the next time i blowover.
i'll have to get a new daggerboard and secure it to the boat next time.
i can hardly wait till the sidekicks are available.

I assume that your inflatable did not have a between the leg strap to hold it down...this is somthing that the manufacturers should have as standard features, but are only offered as accessories. The inflated bladders of course lift up, and without being secured down below, will end up around your neck.
There are paddler/fishing versions (I've seen this at West Marine and Orvis), which appear to inflate under the arms, but seem to also be lacking a security strap to keep it from riding up....

thanks for the quick reply. my inflatable is a yakima sos. i think i'll attach it to my adventure with a foot or so of nylon strap and a 3 foot leash with a loop at the end to stick my foot into. i'll use it to get a better boost up and over the gunwales and onto the boat without pulling it over.
i'll test it in a pool rather than try it in the middle of the indian river lagoon.

Another suggestion. I use an Orca Gear pfd - looks like a windbreaker jacket with zip off sleeves and either auto-inflates or manual. Nice to have when those afternoon thunder storms hit. I hit it with a puff of
air in rough water which gives it enough boyancy to stay afloat without
restricting movement . And it's bright yellow for visability. Of course, since I'm in an Outback I've never needed to actually use it as a pfd :lol:
