Just curious if those that fish from their yak if an anchor trolly is a must have or if you don't use one when fishing. I have heard a couple of different opinions from some local guys.

Wonder what you folks have to say.

I really like mine. Use it to keep the bow into the water, wind/current.

Don't use it. Have a clamcleat mounted to both sides of the boat, one for bow, one for stern. One-handed operation. Can anchor front or back in seconds, one-handed.

Absolutely yes, essential for anchoring safely in current, adjusting angle of drift when using drift chute and tying off if using a buoy as a tie point. I wouldn't be without mine. Have made them up in the past but the one on my current Outback is a Hobie trolley and I can reccomend it.

Absolutely use an anchor trolley, however I don't like to drill holes in our PA's so we use the temporary anchor trolley as seen on YouTube by yakntexas. Works great for the wife and I!! Hope this helps.

Since I don't fish with our Oasis, I haven't used a drill less AT on it.

I have one for my Freedom Hawk Pathfinder. It was a little tricky for the stern attachment due to the pontoons/stabilizers. You can't use the rear handle with the pontoons/stabilizers. I ended up using the fish rod holder extender in the fishing rod with the tent bungee cord attachment wrapped around it. I can use the same rig on the port or starboard side by just removing the rod holder extender from one side and putting it in the other side.

If I take my FH Pathfinder out where I won't need an anchor, I leave my drilles AT in its on bag in the trunk of my Ridgeline.

yakntexas's system is low cost, easy to assemble, and simple to use. I got all of the parts at my local Ace. I sliced and diced the line and reattached it to the O ring and through the brass snaps in about an hour. It would have taken less time if I had put the system on any Hobie with a front and rear handle. I cut about 5" of pipe insulation off a longer piece and put it over the part where I used the plastic tie straps to attach the line to the O ring. Then, I wrapped the 5 inches of pipe insulation with the trolley inside it with duct tape. That gives me a good grip to grab and run it up and down the side of the yak to position the anchor or to attach the anchor line.

If I fished out of our Oasis, I would use yakntexas's system. Home Depot and local Lowe's didn't have the tent bungee cords. I got a pack of 10 from my local Ace. They are handy for other yak uses.

Nah... don't use one... too much fiddling about... with the proviso that I fish almost exclusively in tidal but relatively calm waters not in places with huge tidal currents and overfalls.

That doesn't mean that it can't/doesn't get rough and there are certainly lots of ship/boat wakes to put up with, but I have never felt too uncomfortable or threatened with capsize just anchoring in the 'normal' way

If I want to anchor I just chuck the hook overboard with the anchor line fed through the bow padeye so that the kayak anchors from the bow like any other boat. But most of the time if anchoring to fish, I use a sea anchor (drogue), deployed in the same manner on a relatively short line, because the fish I am usually hunting in this way like a bit of movement in the bait which is created by the slight drift of the boat.

To collect the sea anchor I just pedal forwards steering to one side of the anchor line until I am towing the chute to one side of the boat, then I steer towards that side to keep the line away from the mirage drive until the line comes up to the surface, then pull it in and away.

I use mine alot. Use the stake out stick or anchor. Like evryone said allows you to move you foward or back to get the best casting position. I havent used for drift chute yet, still waiting on more info.

I don't use one. I use a popular anchor rig in our area, referred to as the bsteves rig, after the NWKA member who introduced it. My buddy rigged up an anchor trolley and just about capsized when he ended up sideways in some current. The bsteves rig puts you pretty much bow or stern on, with very little possibility of ending up crossways. Its primary benefit though is that it is a quick release system. I'm sure this is rig is used elsewhere too. Link:
