Post subject:  Hull side up ideas for garage storage.

Hello all,

I have a new dilemma that I could really use some hellp on: my short garage and low ceiling eliminates the possibility of ceiling suspended storage. Right now, I have the Oasis and Adventure on a wall sling and the Revo 13 is, hull side up, on two sawhorses.

Can anyone recommend some solutions for storing my three kayaks, hull side up, on a wall mount or portable mount that could hold all three in the same vertical space?

Ideas, photos, and links are welcome.

Thanks!

This is what I did on the outside of my garage. Find a strong part near the bow (Mirage drive well works well). I use a 2x6 horizontal, covered with carpet to hold the bow. For the stern, I have shelf brackets with scrap 2by material on edge for temporary, and a sling (mine are a rope through a pool noodle) to hold up and cushion the rear. They rest on the 2by and bracket only when putting them up or taking them down. The sling holds them just off the bracket when stored.

Works well for me almost 5 years now.

Darn good idea Bob.

That is a hell of a lot of AIs (a whole heard) is that one for every member of the family or one for each day of the week.

Actually I'm down to 'only' 3 AI's but also a TI, so the number of seats is still the same :D

Looks like you had an Armada! I like the setup but Matt Miller's posts keep popping into my head which reinforces my goal to mount my 3 Hobies on the rails vs. saddled. However, I tend to question this goal when I see so many Old Salts posting photos of their Hobies cradled.

PS: I christened the Revo 13 today at Canaveral National Seashore (New Smyrna Beach FL). I enjoyed the kayak immensely and the scenery was out of this world! Fish jumping everywhere, dolphins corralling fish, and a 30 inch Sea Trout were some of the highlights. If anyone is interested, I can post the crude footage I recorded/photographed from my iPhone.

It's not hull side up, but here's my setup. Oasis, Revo & AI on rolling cart stored in garage on sides.

Where did you get the rolling cart? That seems like a mighty helpful option.

It was a diy project, I needed space in the garage for car during winter and didn't want to keep yaks outdoors.

It's basically a frame made of 2x3's, upper rack has a 12" depth, lower about 30", space between lower rack & upper is about 39", upper rack to paddle storage about 32", spacing between vertical frame is about 65". Pegs on back support fishing rods/reels. Padding on wood supports to protect hulls.

Of course I just approximated measurements based on garage height and how much I could get out of a 2x3 with minimal waste. Wheels are simple 2" casters. I did lap joints at all connections, glued and screwed for strength.

Nice work. I like the pegs for the fishing poles. What is the skill level for doing a lap joint? My best project to date are putting in baseboards. Would I be out of my league?

Easy to do with a table saw. Not necessary though, you can screw or bolt the supports onto the sides of the upright 2x3 instead. Lap joint just makes a cleaner look.

I'm not much of a woodworker...I think that this would be a good use for one of those Kreg Jigs or the cheaper Harbor Freight versions.

I just finished making the storage racks for our Hobie kayaks! I have to build 2 more wall mounts for my Mirage drives. I used a router to round off all of the edges on the wood.

Really nice work.
I would staple on some old carpet scraps on the wood where the kayak rests. Thanks for sharing.
