Hey, y'all,

This is my first post, hope I don't commit any capital offenses.

I have a new Hobie Oasis on order and my wife and I hope to use it during our 40th Anniversary trip to Cedar Key, FL at the end of the month.

Does anyone have any experience or advice about using the Mirage Drives while visiting the off shore islands at Cedar Key?

Are there issues with water depth?

Thanks,
Greg

you should be OK with the mirage drive.we launched from a boat ramp that was set up for airboats. That should have been my first clue.We found some sandbars in the inlet.I was in a Native with a propel drive.Didn't get to use it much.lots of shallow water. But there were some places to launch from the beach.Out at the end of the peninsula where the shops are there is a launch.Stay in the channels and you'll be fine. You can also feather the pedals and keep the fins up tight under the boat. This will get you through the skinny stuff.

Just watch the tides. Many of the launches go dry at low tide  This picture was taken at Cedar Key several years ago....

So,islandsspeed, did you guys wait for the tide to come in?My first experience at Cedar Key was quite similar.I had to drag my yak off the mud.My wife and her sister were in a 16' aluminum canoe and didn't want to get out.The mud is quite deep.Eventually we all got out of it and paid real close attention to the water depth. Not a fun day.

We were just short of the Shell Mound ramp. We were out fishing and tried to get in because of a hugh storm moving our way. Friends at the launch attached rope to a line I cast to them. Then pulled the rope out and attached to kayaks. They then slid us across the mud to the ramp.

Gentlemen,

I appreciate all the feedback. I'm rather familiar with Cedar Key. It's in my county and I've taken day trips there on numerous occasions. However, I have never kayaked or canoed from there.

It sounds as thought it may not be the ideal place to launch from for our maiden voyage, but I'm pretty well locked into it. My daughters have reserved us a "Honeymoon Cottage" for Labor Day weekend.

The girls and my wife will never forget our canoe "adventures" (a word that our family often uses as a euphemism for "distasters") in the Everglades -- they won't let me forget about any of them either.

Thanks,
Greg

Going out without a good tide table is a good way to spend some unplanned down time in the mud in a tidal river/ria, estuary .

Below is a link to the best tide table I have found and the projected fishing.

Out here on the left coast, we need to aware of the winds and when they will come in. I have been using the NOAH site for year.

Greg,

I can appreciate your family's canoe "adventures". We did a lot of tent camping when our kids were young and always had some sort of "adventure".
From losing my car keys in the Atlantic to setting up our tent in what was unknown to us, the prelude to a tornado outside of Memphis. We wondered why the ranger came around with his loudspeaker blaring, "Is everyone ok?"

Phil,

This latest trip to Cedar Key was no exception to our "adventures."

On our maiden cruise I put the cart wheels on the Oasis and brought her ashore, then forgot to remove them when we launched again. I could not figure out why we had such a difficult time pedaling back . . .

But is was a great trip.

Too funny!

Your photo album is neat. I can't even figure out how to upload/download a photo to this forum.
