I was looking to purchasing a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14' in the near future. I'm not sure what roof rack I need to carry that on my SUV. I have a 2002 ford explorer that has a factory rack, but I check on the weight capacity on the cross bar is only 100lbs. Can anyone point me out or suggest a good roof rack that can support a PA? I'm thinking I would need to take those crossbars outs and find a better one that supports a PA...Please help me out and suggest some ideas. Thank you!!!

The PA 14 is a very heavy boat for anyone to get onto a roof rack, let alone the high roof of an SUV. You might look into a Thule or Yakima rack. Thule original square load bars have a weight limit of 165 lbs per pair. I'm not sure, however, what cradles you would use or how you would get the PA up onto the roof.

I found a video on Youtube of a big guy loading one on what looks like an Explorer using the Yakima Hully Roller system on the rear crossbar. Not sure what cradles are on the front. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5nuyz4u0fk

A system like that would probably run you $300-400 for bars, mounting feet, and cradles.

I top my PA14 onto my Audi A4 wagon using Thule cross bars, and although weighty, it can be done with moderate effort. I wouldn't want to lift it any higher though. Put the cost of the feet and bars to accommodate that weight towards a trailer.
