I have had some concerns that the road racing clips may not have enough float or may pop out in some instances, but these worries are probably misguided.
I've got SPDs on my mountain bike, you can adjust them to unclip with very little effort, shouldn't be a problem. Straps on bicycles also caused cramping, with SPDs, it's not an issue. Biggest potential problem would be how well bicycle pedals hold up in saltwater. They make stainless steel and titanium versions, a pedal called "Egg Beaters" are popular.
The only solution is to move out of the ghetto and get one before you get run over!!!
This is the SoCal ghetto, where you need to make $40K a year just to be homeless.
