Post subject:  Outfitter Broken Mast socket

Hi there from the UK :-)

I was out on the Irish Sea last Sunday in my Outfitter tandem kayak with the sail up when the mast suddenly came loose. Later inspection inside the kayak revealed that the bottom of the black plastic housing into which the mast fits had broken away at the bottom end where it locates onto a peg which is, itself, inserted through the underside of the hull.

My son was in the rear seat and I think he hauled the sail in too far causing the damage.

I recovered a piece of the back plastic housing which had broken off.

I'll clearly need to replace this housing. Hopefully a replacement can be obtained from Hobie. Anyone know the part number?

More importantly, can anyone advise on how the old housing can be removed from the hull as I guess it is glued in place?

84550001 Mast Reciver.

The part threads into the deck like a screw. If you can get a very long / large flat blade screw driver, insert it into the receiver. Simply unthread. Each boat uses a different length cut off the base of the receiver. Trim the new part to length and insert in the hole... then thread down until it is over the fitting in the keel and flush with the deck. No glue is used.
