Ok, just to clarify to my inner dope...

Some of you are putting a safety line on your mirage drive EVEN WHILE you have the drive locked in place? Not sure that's needed.

Ever since I ventured into this discussion, every damn time I pull my drive coming up to a beach or dock somewhere, I think I'm going to accidentally lose it in the water. :o

Getting two carabiners today.

If the Mirage drive leash is already on (before even hitting the water) then it can't drop overboard to the bottom when putting it in or taking it out. :)

It's not needed while the drive is locked into the drive well, but once you attach the lease (it clips on or off in a second) there is no reason to disconnect it when you drop it in the well. I attach mine in the parking lot before I hit the water. Once in the water a couple feet out, drop it in the well. When returning, I remove the drive and lie it in the cockpit somewhere, leash still attached. I only un-attach it once back on dry land. The leash isn't in the way of anything.
