took my 2009 Sport out for a spin and happened to take a 2012 Mirage drive instead of the one that came with the Sport. both are V2. I was shocked when I couldn't mount the drive. ended up having to paddle 7 mi--my bod is not conditioned for this.

when were the pins added to the drive? can the former version be used in the latest yaks without problems? would be helpful if changes resulted in new version numbers, which were stamped on the products, e.g., V1, V2, V2a, etc.

also would be nice if the web site had a timeline listing all the equipment and changes made.

Unfortunately... we don't have a clear timeline of changes to post.

The latest change with the pins started in 2012 model year. The pin can be removed by twisting and then pulling it out. This is the only change that has caused a current drive not to fit older boats.

but is it OK to use older style drives without the pins in 2012 yaks? I've had 2 Hobies develop leaks in the drive well so don't want to try for 3. I have a new Oasis and only got 1 new drive with it, so need to use the drive from my older Sport for the 2nd well.

The pin is simply to help align the drive when installed in the hull. There is no change in drive function or loading on the hull. The pin can be removed. You can use an older drive in the 2012 as long as it have the beveled end drum shaft. That shaft has splines to keep the shaft from rotating and releasing in a click and go hull.

The pin is easy to remove by rotating it with pliers and pulling it out.

Your new 2012 Drive then becomes backward compatible to virtually any of the drivewells. In an emergency (like having to paddle 7 miles) if you cannot get the pin out, you can jamb the pined Drive into the older drivewell. This will bend the pin and probably ruin it -- you can replace it later. It will not damage the drivewell. 8)

Yes. You don't even remove the screw -- just back it our 2 or 3 turns so the line wraps around the threads. It should be wrapped around about 1 1/2 turns. Then steady the line as you tighten the screw back in. The screw head squashes the line to secure it -- about the same about of tightness as was there before (nice and firm but don't over torque). You just don't want the lines to slip.

It usually takes me at least couple of adjustments to get the rudder centering and tension just right. 8)
