Post subject:  Late model Outback seat onto an early Outback???

I've a 2012 Outback which has the seat with the expanding plugs for attaching it to the yak. I was chatting to someone who has just purchased an early Outback which only has the two holes for fitting a seat and a large recess in the tankwell. My understanding is that the early seats had push in plugs, my question is will the later model seat such as mine fit onto an early Outback???

Check with your local dealer. They can get the parts to allow the newer twist type connection.
The short answer is yes. :-)

He doesn't even have a seat, it came without. Local dealer was unsure to be honest.

Hence it's hopefully a case of buying the new seat and fitting it on.

The new seat should fit the old boat, but I'm trying to remember if the boats have been modified to strengthen those two holes. I think that I remember reading that Hobie upgraded the mold to strengthen the indents to prevent any possible damage from over spreading (or tightening) those plugs.

I might be mistaken, maybe someone else can correct me, but just be aware that if the boat didn't come with the new seat, it might not be designed to handle the stress of an overtightened seat plug.

Anybody remember if this is the case? The spreader plugs on the seats came with production boats starting in 2010. I'm not sure if the mold was changed in that year, or after, or not at all, I just think I read something about that.

Cheers for that, I'll wait and see if any further info is forthcoming

I'm working off memory. I seem to remember a sleve you add or take out. If I am right I work at a Hobie dealer and will get you the info friday. Then you can go to your local guy with a part #.

Looks like Matt posted a new parts catalog. On page 42 are the seat parts I was remembering. Not sure if they will do what you want.

There is a conversion kit which you glue in and allows the newer style seat to be used or converts the old seat to the newer twist plugs. Either way you can do it. Scrumpy, check out Bretty's post on Vyak on how to install them.
