We have a Hobie Outfitter and a Revolution. My orders were to get both kayaks off the backyard deck. Decided to build an outdoor rack.

I was originally going to use pressure treated 4x4's and lag bolts. When I got to Home Depot I took a wrong turn down the plumbing aisle and was surprised at the rigidity of the 3" and 4" PVC pipe. Decided to change the design on the fly and walked out with (3) 10-foot 3" pipes and fittings. Cut the pieces with a Sawzall and had this PVC rack finished in a little over 2 hours. Even with both kayaks onboard, the rack feels solid.

BTW, this PVC rack is quite lightweight. I can carry it by myself. Originally thought I might need to bury the feet but it's not necessary. I plan to wrap each hull with a brown tarp to protect them from the sun.

I'm open to suggestions to make it better. Thanks.

Keith

I guess wrapping i brown would be better then black. but most of the time needs to be in a light color to reduce heat build-up on the yak... Good luck and nice rack.

Agree.. don't use a dark color as the heat will build up inside and melt down you kayaks :!:

They also sell a silver tarp. Maybe I'll go with that instead.

BTW, I'm going to drape the tarp over the top of the kayak, leave the bottom exposed, and wrap with a bungee. That should help mitigate heat build up.

Can you advise re: length of the sections used? Thanks

Here you go! It's all 3-inch diameter, schedule 40 PVC pipe. For more than 2 kayaks, I'd suggest 4-inch pipe for the lower kayaks and 3-inch diameter for upper kayaks (using a stepdown coupling).

Also, the 24-inch bottom legs could be easily trimmed down to a 12 to 18 inches. The extra length was because I was originally going to partially bury them, but soon realized this was not necessary.

Lastly I will be adding a security strap of some type around the upper horizontal cross-piece pipe screwed to the brick to prevent an inadvertent tip forward.

I wonder if this is strong enough to hold two Oasis kayaks??

Hi Sterling,
This would easily be able to hold two Oasis Kayaks. Even though there is a weight difference it isn't so much that it would make any real difference.

Thanks for letting me know that, Roger. I think I might just build one of those for both of my boats. It looks like a much nicer, lighter weight solution.

I like that rack, I wonder if it could be hung from some rafters of my awning. On the side of the house. Will the glue hold three yaks. One perception Swing, One prowler 15. and a Hobie Out back? Of course the rack would be vertical instead of at an angle.

Thanks for posting this great concept.

I will probably do this for our Oasis and my other brand fishing yak.

Then I can sell our trailer and get it out of our driveway.

Walmart sell tarps with an silver side and a brown side at reasonable prices.

If I build your ramp, I will buy one and put it over my yaks with the silver side up.

The expensive name brand yak covers barely make it through 2 summers here in California.

I can buy several Walmart tarps for a few bucks.

Thanks
