| Post subject: | Old Pedal Arms? |
Matt, is there any way to still obtain the older pedal arms with screwed on pedals, or maybe convert the newer pedal arms with press fit pedal shafts to the screw on variety 
I took my Sport out on the lake all day yesterday, and I got terrible foot cramps in both feet. I actually had to paddle for a while  I would love to change the pedals to the clip variety I have on my bikes.
I checked the spare parts catalog, but no dice. Thanks for any input you can provide here

This is indeed quite an interesting idea. Clip pedals and shoes have been use on bikies for many years now, and there's no reason they shouldn't work on pedal kayaks. The only issue I can think of at first glance is corosion of the metal parts. Bike hardware is usualy kept dry except when on the road and doesn't need to be stainless or aluminum. Kayak hardware that is not stainless, aluminum or some form of composite carbon-based material will simply not laast one season. Matt, has Hobie looked into clip pedals? Sounds like a cool idea... |

I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I can't. Other on the forum have already made this mod. They had the older pedal arms. The problem I have is Hobie has gone to press fit, pinned in pedal axles, so I can't make the mod on my newer drive unit. I could just cut the pedals off, and drill a new hole, but that would shorten my stroke, since the pedal would be a little bit shorter. |

I finally got a new set of pedals and was really sad to see they did away with the ability to just change out the pedals. These new pedals are most uncomfortable when used with the turbo fins and bare feet for any length of time. An ergonomic advisor should have been consulted in the design of Hobie pedals. If I have to put on shoes or sandals that have any thickness to them, then I will have to move the pedals to the last available notch. Trouble is, when I do that, the pedals hit the hull. It is really sad to see Hobie using cheaper and cheaper parts... |

The new pedals were designed in-house as a way to reduce corrosion and rust issues along with reducing the weight. We did not do this as a cost issue as much as a supply issue too. The pedal vendors could no longer keep up, they rusted and they were heavy. We are looking at another possible re-design in the future to address a few issues that have come up with these. We too would like them to be perfect! |

Hey, Matt! Thanks for your help on this... I recently placed an order with KFS for an older set of threaded cranks. JonS didn't know these were available still, but said he would check with you. I also ordered a set of clipon pedals and shoes online, so hopefully I'll soon be able to report on whether clipons were a good idea or not
