Outback Bilge Pump Storage

I always take a hand bilge pump when out on the water in my Outback. I usually have it handy for sit-in kayaking friends who have taken a dump and now have water to remove from their hull. It's also there just in case my hull starts leaking (has happened 3 times over 6 years).

I would guess that some of you carry a pump as well. Does anyone have any great suggestions regarding securing these pumps well enough to stay in place when the yak is tipped to plug-in the wheels — ideally, a place that's out of the way, yet handy enough to grab from the seat when needed?

I had been storing my pump between the back of my old Hobie style seat and it's clipped-on storage bag, but the pump tends to slip out when I tip the yak for the wheel cart.

Ha! Yes they do, and yes, I pity some of my sit-in friends.

But let's get real: Yes, I'd rather be in a sit-on-top if I'm going to dump. And I like my Hobie. But be careful when dissing a nicely designed sit-in kayak. They are far more efficient to paddle than many Hobies. And they are light-weight boats capable of waters I would not take a Hobie, such as on an extended wilderness trip, or in shallow waters with lots of snags (there are just too many things to break on my drive).

How about right where you might use it? All of our 8" hatches have a pair of small holes in the inner lip. They are designed for attaching items. Shown here is a "boombat" for the sail. I usually also keep an emergency tow line attached here for quick access. The attachment lines shown are left over Spectra scraps.


As an alternative, you can get some industrial grade Velcro, glue/screw/2 way tape 2 strips to a convenient location and wrap them around your pump barrel for quick release.

2X. store it where you will need to use it... Best place to store something you might use once every two years?
