Post subject:  Good Price

I recently saw a Hobie Mirage Outfitter Kayak for $800. Not sure the year or where to find it but it looks like it is good shape. Problem is it is pretty much stripped except for the rear rudder, mesh bags, handles, and storage hatches. It needs both seats and both mirage drives. I was thinking it was a little high. Thanks for your input.

No drives or seats?

Caution that it is not a warranty replaced hull that someone is now trying to sell... or a stolen / lost one.

Serial numbers are on the transom area:

Serial number location on Hobie Kayaks

Serial numbers on Hobie Kayaks are located on the transom or rear of the hull. The number is hand-engraved using a vibration tool. The number is on the underside of the rear of the boat, on the right side. Newer boats have a rectangular, raised, ridge around the serial number to make it easier to find. You can rub a small amount of graphite or soil into the serial number engraving to make it easier to read. Serial numbers use the following format: (example CCMB2345H989)

I'd pass it by. Replacing drives & seats, you're looking at an additional $1000.

I've always been suspicious of a 'hull' only sale.

When a boat is replaced under warranty, it's usually because of a "below the waterline" crack, All the parts you are missing are transferred to the new hull. The defective boat is supposed to be turned in and made unusable, usually by cutting the serial # out. Someone may have gone dumpster diving to salvage this and try for a fast buck. If there is an unrepairable crack in the drivewell you probably wouldn't notice it and might not be able to expose it without using a Drive. Best to buy something complete and after a demonstration on the water. 8)
