Hi Zenyak,
I systematically add close to 100 lbs. to my Oasis to bring the front of the boat down lower in the water when I kayak solo. Not only does this increase the length of the boat at waterline but it also puts the stem (bow) into the water where it can cut through it like it's supposed to. I know we sometimes look at our peddle boats like bicycles but they are not bikes. Weight doesn't play that big of a role as we don't have to peddle these things up hill. Actually once you get all this weight moving it actually helps keeping the momentum going. So don't let extra weight worry you too much. As long as we don't put in so much as to go beyond the boat's capacity we'll be OK.

Am clearly out of the SF water league (am kayaking small lakes in Nebraska), but I'll give my 2 cents worth …could a drybag full of water work to keep the bow down? It'd be a simple thing to do, would be flexible weight-wise (more water, more weight), and if water conditions dictate you suddenly do not need a weight, just dump the water overboard. The disadvantage might be physical size vs weight.

I'm a full time bicycle commuter, so I'm feeling your desire. There are many obstacles to be aware of and ready for, so it won't be easy. But if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. One word comes to mind...PIONEER. I've been a pioneer more than once in my life. I really like that word. PIONEER...has a lot of self respect in it!

I have made the trip about 7 or 8 times now. Each time has been an Adventure! Have learned a lot. It is really wonderful being out there. The large ships have not turned out to be a problem. But the wind and current is definitely something to be aware of. Have steadily been making adjustments/repairs to my older craft to keep it sea worthy. Have been landlocked for a couple weeks due to sore knees from my last trip and busyness. I'll try to make more reports. Sailing is great but one really has to be ready to let go of the main sheet quickly and to balance properly. I have gone over twice. Once was partially due to a rudder malfunction, the second time a gust caught me off guard. I have the furling kit now, after going home in some mad strong wind with sudden gusts, it was quite an experience. 7-8 miles in 1 1/2-2 hours depending upon conditions.
