The paddle retainer strap on my Outback has stretched to the point it's of no value. I figured I could tighten it from inside the hull, but surprise! Is it possible to remove and reuse the fitting where the cord enters the hull? Screw-in fitting? Right-hand thread? Is there a better way to tighten this strap? It's not loose enough for an overhand knot. Anything else I need to know before I start? Thanks for your help.

Yes!

Yes!

We have a tool if needed; 71115101 TOOL - SCREW IN FITTINGS

All you need is a short piece of 1/4" bungee cord.

IMHO, it's better to use the Hobie tool.....if the needle nose pliers "slip" and you gouge the surrounding plastic, you will be very unhappy

My paddle keeper bungee/shockcord attachment must be different than yours. I have a very old (12+ year old demo model) Mirage Outback that I've owned since new. The paddle keepers on both sides have finally stretched out so much that neither will safely hold my paddle in place. I would like to just purchase a small piece of new cord and attach it to the existing fittings. How does one take apart this type of fitting without damaging it? I really don't want to have to drill out the rivets and install new ones. I may have already damaged one of the ends in this youtube slideshow, but I can use the one on the opposite side of the yak if necessary.

That video is private, so guessing that your have the black end connectors that have a single screw holding each end? The shock cord dead ends into them?

There is a ring / cylinder that you pull off (towards the shock cord). The ring depresses a barb into the cord. Once the ring is pulled back you can pull the shock cord out. Reverse process to reassemble.

I'll have to fix that video when I get back home next week. It is as you describe, but a single rivet rather than a screw.

Thanks. Maybe I'll try and grab it with some needlenose and pull that cylinder back.

It's pretty easy to do... I took mine apart and replaced them with stuff from local boat store. make sure you heat the ends where you cut to keep the outside skin from unraveling.
