Post subject:  Brass Threaded Screw Hole in Bottom of my Outback

I have what looks like a threaded insert with no screw in it on a Hobie Outback I purchased used. Water is leaking through into the yak at a slow rate. The insert is on the forward side of the mirage drive well just under where the front of the drive sits. The hole is on the bottom of the kayak. Can anyone tell me what this threaded insert is for and is there something I can do to stop the leak? Any help would be appreciated.

Not likely the source of the leak. The hole is not drilled through. This is a reinforcement part for molding and normally a small plastic cap covers it. The threaded part is how it is held into the mold. The leak could go around the item, but not likely through.

either way, not repairable? It is definitely where water is getting in and getting out. Thanks for your response!

Look from the forward hatch inside the hull... the inside should be solid, but could be cracked.

If cracked, we caution repairs, but if done correctly... you could seal in a variety of ways. Plastic welding, Goop... 3M 5200, or as noted by roadrunner: 3M 8010

Thanks for quick response... I have looked but can see no visible cracks. One might be just behind the plastic "post" (my rough description) but just not visible.... when I put water in the hull just to see where it might exit... it comes out where this reinforcement is... weird.

I will try a patch around this area. Thanks!

Roadrunner helped me out greatly with all of his advice. He would likely recommend the 3M 8010 above all other methods, but I'll let him tell you that. Plastic welding is a good choice if you can get to the area. 3M 5200 has it's fans and I just used it to cover the Polyethylene cutting board I used as a patch on the inside of my kayak that had more than a little hole. I have not put the kayak back in the water yet but plan to this weekend. From 3M's own info on the 5200 or 5200 Fast Cure, the problem is Polyethylene has low surface energy. In layman's terms that means almost nothing sticks to it. Some materials that 5200 bonds to have 700 PSI of bond strength.........it's 48 for PE.....not a lot! As I said I recently went through a similar problem (see post "Worst Customer Service Ever....but not from Hobie). There are some pics of the plastic welding I did. I am no expert by any means and my leak was very big but after repair only a little water now gets in and I don't think it's coming from my repaired area but potentially from very almost imperceptible drive well cracks or pinholes. At least my kayak is usable now vs 10 gallons of water inside the hull in 10 minutes.
