I've noticed that the shape of the fin is changed: Any idea about the performances compared with the current Mirage Drive with Turbo Fin?

I suspect that the fins have only changed their shape to enable the flip to reverse. After almost twenty years since the Miragedrive was introduced, I would be surprised if Hobie has found some significant means of making the fins work better, so I wouldn't expect these fins to be superior to those already available.

I would hesitate to cite the Eclipse fin design as a normal evolution of the Miragedrive fins. The reason for its different design is quite simple: the forces available from the stepper action make existing fins useless as they would flex too much. Equally, it is hard to imagine the Eclipse fins being useful on pedal kayaks, as there would be insufficient leg power to cause the fins to twist and make the pitch needed for forward progress.

The penguin wings analogy remains just as valid as ever, despite Hobie perhaps trying different marketing approaches. I believe the taper simply disappeared due to the simple physical fact that more space was needed for the flip-reverse mechanism.

Matt,

Any idea on the retrofit cost of the new drive?

Matt,

Any idea about the cost of the new Hobie MirageDrive 180°? :?: Thanks!

Only that it will be a bit more than currently offered drives. We will be pricing that next Spring.

Matt,
"Thanks" for your response...so, will that make the price in the neighborhood of $775?

Not yet considering pricing.

If they go with a '180* Drive' for the Mirage Eclipse; they could use a simple 'over the handlebar' strap; Pull DOWN 'RED'=Reverse, Port to go backwards; and Pull DOWN 'GREEN'=GO, Starboard for forward. No 'bending', one hand on bar, easy 'take-down'.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207683758585767&set=pb.1046342415.-2207520000.1469197771.&type=3&theater

Is the new drive more efficient or faster going forward than the existing drive ? Is there more Maint. required on the new drive ?

Same / similar performance. A few more mechanical changes, but very similar as far as maintenance.

That's nice! But please include only one Mirage drive in new TIs! These drives are expensive and costs even more in countries as Sweden. You could probably lower the price of a new TI in Sweden with 1500 dollars if it included only one Mirage drive and one paddle. I have never needed two Mirage drives or two paddles and one of my Mirage drives is after six years still unused. So please save us some money! You could certainly sell more boats with a lower price and more people could enjoy the pleasures of a TI!

These new mirage drives create a huge incentive for me to finally get rid of my older 2012 TI (though there is nothing wrong with it), and pick up the new model when available (which would be my 4th TI).
Very clever Hobie, I'm hooked line and sinker (lol)

Hello,

Just talked to a local dealer and they have placed their order for the 2017 Outbacks and I was advised that the price increase is 150.00 over last years models. Just need to wait until my new Outback arrives in late september to Early october.

FE,
From what I read above is sounds like the new drives are backward compatible.
