So, I thought the new ones were worth the $25 apiece.

These have been bent to the side from being in the wrong position to start with. Thread in the (NEW) pins and angle the pins so the twist toggle can rotate towards the mast instead of bending the pin.

Right on; new ones are...these old ones were also bent along that axis, although not as bad...must have been loose somewhere along the line and rotated a bit.

WOW, never thought of that.
File that one under "I learn something new every day."
Amazing, after sailing the same class of boat for over 25 years, that something that simple hadn't even occured to me.
THANK YOU MATT for that little jewel of wisdom.

Things you learn when setting up and manitaining 60+ boats at a time for Worlds!

One additional comment on that... angle the pin to point at the projected shroud tang location... not mast base. Will be aft of the base.

A 1/4 turn saves me $50 in replacement pins, and who knows how much in rescue and salvage. Thanks Matt.

Better than this. $500 worth of damage.

I'm a novice at this hobbie so please forgive my ignorance.

Needless to say, the bent pins are not good. However, I'm wondering with that slight bend is the stainless steel that much more weakened that it can fail?

Thanks.

If they are bent replace them. Plain and simple.

The bend doesn't weaken the pin - it actually makes it harder (stress hardening). But it also makes it more brittle and less capable of taking the shock loading of the shroud when it suddenly goes taut.

Ok so the top of the pin should be parrallel to the hull edge or offset? And if offset, the top of the pin should point to what? Not being at my boat and not having internet service at the boat location doesn't help.

Thanks

Thanks MBounds for your reply. Given this information and that the pins haven't been replaced since 1982 when it was new, I'm planning to replace them.

Orientation of the shroud anchor: the small clevis pin that is used in the hole of the shroud anchor would be perpindicular to the actual shroud that supports the mast...so the shroud anchor will be twisted (not parallel to the hull) and "pointed" slightly aft of the mast base, as Matt Miller said.

Sounds like I've got two anchor pins in the wrong position as the clevis pins that attach my shroud wires point directly at the tramp. And if I understand you correctly, that means I need to rotate the two anchor pin roughly 90 degrees. Lets hope they are still straight.

More like 45 degrees. You want the pin to work like a hinge towards the shroud tang... in the best setup.

It all depends on the mast rake and relative position of the shroud tang. All of this is "best case". We have the twist toggle in the system to help take the side load off the pin. We just TRY to set up this way to reduce possible side-loading of the anchor pin.

I did a quick illustration that may help.
