Post subject:  Hobie 18 EPO Rudder Repair

Can anyone tell me the best coating to apply to my 1986 EPO rudders? There are fibers explosed on the sides where the rudders were exposed to the elements. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
William B. Jones

I'd get a waterproof epoxy (like West System) and one of the UV-protecting additives they have and put a coat or two over the rudders, then after it cures lightly sand them to shape.

Good luck!

Or, get some 2 part epoxy paint. This will stand up to the UV ray s pretty well. I think Interlux has a good one. You can find it at West Marine or at

I have a Hobie 17 that I repaired the EPOs according to DougHobie17's link. Fantastic! They're slick as snot. I used the West System 205A hardener and the 105A Resin with the 406 Silica.

Having never use epoxy like this before, it was a learning experience (to say the least). The 0.44 pt of hardener, 1 qt. of resin and 1.7 oz. of silica was plenty. I actually messed up 2 batches by using too much hardener.

After sanding with 320 grit after each epoxy application, I applied one coat of epoxy. After 3 layers of epoxy on each side, I wet sanded with 800 grit, then 1500 grit and then with 2000 grit. Then waxed with good wax.

I would do this for money if I had the room. I may be making room! I kind of enjoyed it!

Good luck!
