wow those things are Nice! wish i could afford them! centralmichsailor, when is your next extended vacation? how long will you be gone? how close are your neighbors? can they see real good? are they easily distracted? are they going with you? do they like you? is there a ladder close so i can reach those wings?

...I think if you are real careful, you can stand on the hull cradles to reach the wings...no need for a ladder that way! |

Great purchase, Caleb. Congratulations! Hobie didn't add the stainless rail reinforcement plates at the rear crossbar area. Our '99 SX rear crossbar area cracked and the rail reinforcement plated has minimized the problem. |

I purchased a set of 4" curved deck ports...in the spring when I put this girl together, I will cut (gasp!) some holes in the back and install the anchor plates. Better safe than sorry. It may well end up being the last new Hobie 18 in the world, and I plan to do it right. I purchased new crossbars, sails, mast, rudder system, d-boards, everything...(all factory)...she'll be a beauty! The sails are custom colors, to complement the existing red decals on the hulls with a nod to the past sail designs used on 18's...in other words, classic looking. |

If it were me, I'd wait at least one year before cutting holes in the boat (i.e. the warranty period). It's likely that the boat doesn't even need the anchor plates at the rear crossbar (this was mainly an issue on boats from the mid-80s). Maybe if you plan to sail the boat often heavliy loaded, but really, if the boat is built right, it should be fine without them. You'll also want to check to make sure that the reinforcement plates fit into the pocket in the hull before getting out the hole saw. The hull flange is narrower at the back crossbars and you may have difficulty getting the plate to fit in, especially at the inside connection. I would definitely recommend you do a dry run before doing anything permanent. Great looking boat otherwise. sm |

FWIW The reinforcement plates will indeed fit under the outside lip at the rear crossbar, however they will NOT fit under the inside lip at the rear crossbar. to quote the wizard of OZ, no how, no way. to quote me, not even with vaseline or KY Jelly. Stephen PS: Anyone interested in my 2004 hulls ? Always garaged and look almost as good as the brand new ones. Fast too ! |

It all depends on the hull and the reinforcement plate (probably moreso the plate as its not likely to be a high-tolerance part). I managed to get them to fit at all the connection points on my '85 boat, including the inside rear pockets. But there is no doubt, it was tight and I wouldn't be surprised if they're a no-go on 9 out of 10 boats. What is the asking price on the '04 hulls? sm |

.... but Stephen .... those 2004 hulls are 1ST PLACE NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION hulls!!!!! so, doesn't that mean that they should cost more then a pair of "Non Champion" hulls even if new???? With spring just around the corner I thought I'd bump this thread and remind everyone that there is still one set of these shiny new hulls available for sale and is sitting at the factory warehouse. The set can be had at the same price delivered anywhere in the CONUS, in 2010 dollars. The offer will expire if there is no interest through the better part of the summer. |
