Post subject:  1986 Hobie 18 Anchor plates ?
Greeting , Just bought a 1986 Hobie 18,

Been reading about the hull issues with that year,

Can someone please direct me to a good reference
for the nformation needed to do the "anchor plate" retrofit ?

Also the Glass reinforcement work reccomended near the front
cross bar ?

Does anyone know of a good technical reference for all the
reccomended upgrades, reinforcement, fixes etc.?

(other than trying to read thru thousands of posts)

I'd strongly suggest finding Mr. Millers' comments here next, I'm positive it's discussed in this Forum, if you dig deep enough (you just have to read thru thousands of posts). I can't remember where they are.

>>You can add the patch. The 4" wide one is not wide enough to distribute loads outside of the anchor "indent" that the anchor plates bolt into. Since the inside of the boat has a bead of putty at the deck to hull connection, you have to grind that out and or fair it in with more putty to make a radius. Then sand the inside of the deck and side wall. Make a patch that is about 12" wide and long enough to go 6 inches into the deck and down the side wall 6 - 8 inches.<<

How easy has the fix been for people with the 1984-88 18's? Any failures after the fix? I am thinking of picking up an 87 H18 (might as well have a 14, 16, and an 18 ), but I do not want the above to occur...

The pictures help, despite the fact that they remind me of my last colonoscopy. :shock:

It looks like the pics are of a stock boat with only
the 4" patch ?

Based on where the broken boat failed, I think I can
now figure out where the larger patch should be placed.
