Just setting this up for the first time just wondering if people have got the mast up single handed it will be kept rigged at its new home I'm pretty tall and still push the occasional rugby scrum around So I thought getting it off the trailer and on a slight slope would help any thoughts ? |

Slope is helpful. There is a video recently posted on this in the 18 forum. Check it out. I can do it one man but its tricky first time. |

If you've got the strength, it's doable single handed for sure. Tie a line to one of the trap wires or the main halyard, route it to a pulley on your trailer's mast support, and then bring it back through a jib cleat. Once you've got the mast hoisted, you can take the slack out of the line and cleat it off, then jump down and pin the forestay. If you take the boat off the trailer prior to stepping the mast, you can throw a loop of line around one of the bows and tie your pulley to that. Getting the mast step pinned to the front crossbar is a little tricky without help. Probably want a ladder or other item to support the head of the mast. You definintely want to take the time to make sure all your shrouds are running clear and won't get hung up on the rudders, etc. because there won't be anyone to help un-tangle you mid-lift and you'll have to drop the mast, undo the tangle, and then start over. If there's a significant breeze, you'll want to align the boat/trailer so the wind is coming straight from behind. Any cross wind and the mast could get away from you. If you let it swing too far out to the side you will break the mast hinge. sm |

When lifting the mast, you need to be real careful not to let it twist/rotate as this will also snap the base. The problem I had was fighting the diamond wires until I could get under them. There are other methods using a gin pole and attaching bungies from the trap handles to the cross beam to keep the mast lined up and then cranking it up. |
