I am in the process of making my mind up on upgrading from a very old H16 to a 1984 H18 with Magnum wings. I do not believe that the previous owner has ever changed the standing rigging. If I do end up buying this boat I know that I'll want to update the standing rigging. I was wanted to pick your guys brains about replacing the diamond wires. Is this something that you guys typically would change out as well, or would you just leave it along (It does look just fine, no frayed wire).

This boat does look well loved, however not used much in the past 5 years or so. Is there anything else you guys think I should look for?

Thanks so much,

Adam.

I would say replacing the diamond wires is not required as long as they are in good shape - give them a through inspection. All the other standing rigging (bridles, shrouds, upper & lower forestay) should be replaced regardless of condition if you don't know their age.

If you replace the diamonds, I would also replace the rotator bolt (which secures the lower end of diamond wires). I had one break a few years ago (during a race of course). You can make it back in without diamond wires, but the mast bends like a twig, you have to take it real easy or you could snap the mast.

Replace the shroud anchor pins.

Make sure the boat has the crossbar reinforcing plates.
