Post subject:  What diameter main sheet?

Anyone have tips for a comfortable diameter main sheet? I just bought a new main sheet through the Hobie catalog and it feels narrow in my hand. I swear the old one was a larger diameter.

Years ago I went from the 7/16 (stock) to 3/8" dia mainsheet. It runs better through the blocks. If you wear gloves it won't matter if you go down one diameter.
I'm trying that with all my lines when I am replacing them..

Old sheets will develop a lot of fuzz over time and seem bigger compared to new of the same size. Staying with old original larger sizes used to be refered to as going "arthritic", only for the old guys who had lost their grip strength. IMO I think it's a wive's tale. I'm 48 and just upgraded to 3/8" and have no problems. Were going to go with 5/16" diameter on the 16 next year.

John, Thanks for the info on the line sizes. Us old guys (I'm 46) should get together at some type of "Old Goats" cruise somewhere.

You know, when I bought my Hobie just this year (after not owning one since the 80's) my thoughts were, "I'm not 50 yet so maybe if I haven't forgotten too much, and with a couple of years of practice, I could possibly compete in some seniors' event".

Suprise  at 45 a Hobie sailor is eligible for Masters competition?

There goes that plan.

Wow, I am "OLD" as my daughters frequently tell me. I guess I will have to fix the bottoms, & get new sails so I'm competitive as a "master".

Bag it, I need to save for there college education so there not a burden on me the rest of my life, only 11 more years to go before there in & out of college.
