H18 mast bearing

Post subject:  H18 mast bearing
The post extending from the mast base castinig on the crossbar does not stick up high enough to allow the mast bearing to turn freely when the retaining screw and washer are tightened. How do you adjust this? Right now my bearing does not turn at all under the mast.

This is a newer style 18 where the striker post inserts through the step casting? Is the post fully inserted? The bearing should have enough room to turn freely. We even add a teflon chip under the bearing for more lubrication sometimes. I could imagine that the step casting upper surface could be sanded down more to make the distance from the surface to the top edge of the post larger. I would look to see that the post is fully inserted up into the casting.

How do I check this? How can I tell if it is not? If it is not how do I adjust it?

Post subject:  Solution found
I stopped by my Hobie dealer and saw that the new 18s don't use the chip under the bearing. The replacement bearing comes with a chip so I assumed I needed to use it. I installed the bearing without the chip and it rotates freely without a lot of up and down wiggle room. I'm satisfied with this. Does this sound okay to you?
