Will 18 sails work on an 18SX?

Not very well since the SX sails are larger (longer luff). You may be able to attach an extra length of line between your main halyard ring and the halyard attachment grommet at the top of the sail. I'm not sure if the foot of the sails are the same. If so, this is all I can think of you would need to change. Just make sure you use line that can handle the load.

The SX is 1 1/2 foot longer in the luff. The foot is similar. Uses the same boom. Full hoist would make the boom angle really high. Not hoisting fully could cause issues with the sail head pulling out of the luff track.

A member of our fleet has an SX, and really, really likes it. Problem, his main is on its' last leg and he can't afford a brand new one. There never was a significant SX fleet around here and he's really not worried about being class legal as he would never race the boat.

Is there an alternative to a brand new sail? I don't assume there are many (if any) available on the used market. Did any lofts ever cut an all dacron version?

Check on eBay. From time to time you come across H18 stuff. Also do a search of the members for Dan Berger. He has lots of used Hobie parts for H16, H14, H18, and others. Contact him. He may be able to help out.

Nick,

Even the "Cat Reaper" doesn't have one. I think every SX sail in existence has been (or will be) sailed, like Paul's, until death. Just not enough boats out there, unlike the 16 and 18.

www.supersailmakers.com
HOB1030 Main 5 oz Dacron $853.00 new.

I can't imagine a good used one being a whole lot less.
Try Calvert too, there is a guy who had an SX square top made and it wasn't as bad as you'd think.

Thanks for the tips, guys. With the price difference between Hobie and Super Sailmakers of $400 for a main and $140 for a jib, and very few SX boats racing, I'd be inclined to keep my $540.

I hate to recommend Non OEM parts, but if you're not racing, then its not a big thing. I have owned a 'superjib' for my 14 in the past made by supersailmakers and its was a well built sail.
You could just sell that SX and buy a 20 :P

But if I get a 20 I won't have wings on which the hot girls in bikinis can sit, as shown in the Hobie catalog. Hmmm.... racing or hot girls?

Yes, Wings have there advantages. Mine will see my wife of 14 years and my two daughters. No young women in bikinis unless I want to own & live on the boat.

Any sailmaker can take the SX sails you have and use them for a pattern to make new ones. I would try Calvert, Sabre Sails, Super Sailmakers and if your real energetic try Sailrite Kits. You may find something in your price range especially if done "off" season.
