I will be installing rear port holes on my 1984 H18 to do some hull maintenance. Is it better to install the smaller inspection ports fore or aft of the rear crossbar?

Aft. That way you can reach the transom in case you need to re-do the gudgeon bolts (like if one shears off).

I plan on putting in 5" behind the rear crossbar. The 6" look to big. Just remember to do your work while the port ring is out which allows more room to work in the hull.

I did this on my '82 18. It had cracked between the top cap and hull, 1/8" gap. The crack was directly under the rear cross bar. The 5" port holes are too large and won't lay flat requiring a build up of glass or sealant on the sides. Smaller ports would be better. While you are there install a set off stainless brackets on the outside of the hull under the rear cross brace, same part and install as the front brackets. These were upfits on the older 18s. My boat cracked from jumping waves, yes I mean full airs. Landing puts alot of pressure on the side of the hull and tears it loose from the top cap without the braces in there. There is nothing else like airing out an 18' sailboat.
