Were the only sails offered with h18(non-sx) the Dacron Panel sails? I thought the same was true for h16s until i saw a couple of them with the raspberry wedge design(mylar sail?). I noticed on the h18 sail history chart that there was a raspberry wedge variant, but was it for reg h18 or the SX? Dacron panel sails are cool compared to most sailboats with white sails, but the colorful mylar sails are on a whole 'nother level.

I'm pretty sure only the SX-18 had the mylar sails. They were made from the same material as the 17's sail. The SX came out in 1989; it took 2 more years to develop and approve the mylar sails for the 16. They were short-lived and the racers didn't adopt them. That contributed to their short production run. The market for mylar sails for the stock 18 was (and remains) small. |

early mylar sails were problematic for a couple reasons: delamination occured between the layers, but the biggest culprit was probably ignorance on how to care for them. they should not be folded or creased as that eventually becomes a weak or delam point. today's laminated sails are more technically developed, having kevlar or carbon fiber stranding for strength and a mylar scrim to keep it all in place. on the J109 I race on, our heavy air 100% jib is coming to pieces from repeated storage after only 4 seasons! (of course the vertical battens make careful flaking nearly impossible!) |

Hello,just wondering if you have any pics on older 1978 vintage sails? because mine just has a simple red stripe and all white jib. thanx Chris. |

See that sail pattern #36 .... I have a extra set of origonal factory H18 Sails ... in that patten ... purchased new "out of stock" from a Hobie Dealer going out of business .... I stored them for several/many years ... then ... they were used only for several "Special Olympic's" training sessions and for the 2007 H18 NA's in Geneva NY by my friend .... they took 4th Place (Glenn Ross/Ian McAllister) and they are still in very good shape .... sail#1200 .... ... and I do like that sail number ..... |
