Post subject:  Basic initial tensions

I'm very new to this whole sailing thing and have some basic questions regarding setup. The boat is fairly used and has not been tuned as far as I know. The diamond wires are very loose and I would like to know what you guys recommend for an initial adjustment.

I will be starting in light winds and would like some explanations of basic cause and effects of tensioning the diamond wires and the shrouds.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me out.

SummerSled,

This is a great question. One I asked last year when I started to adjust my H18. I am not the best person here (at least not yet :) ) to answer this question. Your best bet is to do a search on this forum for diamond wire and diamond wire tension. Read over what you find then ask more pointed questions. I would also reccommend looking on the catsailor forum. I know I started a thread on there last year for this very question.

You will find many of the same people here on that forum as well.

Keep the shrouds tight at all times. The lee shroud will go a bit slack when sailing, but when on the beach, they should be snug. Just take the play out by having someone pull on the trap wires (full body weight) aft and out to the side while you lower the shroud clevis in the adjusters.

Diamonds can be loose or tight on an 18. There are lots of different opinions, but they should be no looser than being able to pull both to the mast about 18 inches up from their base attachment.

Looser allows mast bend and flattens (De-powers) the sail. Tighter keeps the mast in column and will power up the sail. Although, I recall guys at a Worlds years ago the kept them tight and then used less rotation to depower when sheeting hard upwind.

I sailed at minimum weight and kept the diamonds loose at the 18" (up) measurement. This was fast for me.
