Post subject:  Hobie 18 mast to 18SX with comptip

I have a solid 18 mast on my boat currently. Want to use a Tiger main on it. Can I cut it 1.5' higher and install the comptip to get 29.5'? Is there a difference in standing rigging length and tang placement? Is there a comptip designed for the 18SX. I will be running a spin as well, from a Tiger. Where will the spin tang install? Is the comptip strong enough for the chute? Any and all help appreciated. Found a used SX mast for $250, is that the way to go? Also will I run into boom issues with a Tiger main on a 18?

When I started to look into putting a chute on my H18 I was advised by a number of people to no do this on a comptip. It's too difficult to affix a strong enough tang to handle the load created by the chute. As for the rest, someone else will have to help you there.

The 20 (comp tip mast) had a kite option, why not the SX? I don't know the location/s.

May be best to post on 20 and Tiger forum also. A lot of those guys sailed 18's, before the 20's, before the Tigers.

You may also try/ask Chris Green (aka flumpmaster) he's sailing a Tiger, previously an SX and has spin set up experience on the SX and I believe the 18 as well.

I have an 18SX, and the standing rigging is a different length than a standard 18. Probably best to order the standing rigging from a Hobie dealer, and when you do emphasize the 18SX length. My boat also has a Hobie manufactured spinnaker, but I've not used it yet. I can't help you with the boom question.
