Hi,

I am hoping some of you Hobie 18 gurus may be able to help me with this question.

I have a 1977 Hobie 18 with a set of black anodized magnums. I would like to purchase a new (er) 18 and mount these magnums on it.

What year range of 18 Hobies would accept these magnums without modification (bolt on !!!).

Thank you for very much for any insight you may be able to provide.

Paul

The layout of the 18 has not changed, ever. You can bolt wings onto an 18 from any year as the geometry of all the boats is the same. You just have to install the mounting hardware if it's not already there.

18s from about 1984 to 1988 did not have as much fiberglass reinforcement in the hulls as the other years (Hobie attempted to make the boats lighter). Hobie also added a stronger stainless steel anchor bracket to the front crossbar around that time. If you get a boat from '84 to '88, you will want to add some glass inside the hull at the front crossbars. You also want to make sure the upgraded anchor brackets are installed. You should do these mods regardless of whether you use wings or not.

What is typically done for for the wing anchor plate used at the starboard aft location, this plate would cover the entrance slot for the rear trampoline. I dont really want to have to drill out rivets everytime my tramp is removed (do it for the winter). I was looking into threaded inserts b ut they require a .400 diameter hole...

The anchors for the magnum slide into the trampoline track on the cross bars and are easily removed to remove the trampoline for winter storage. Just remove treaded stud holding the wing leg from the "slug" in the trampoline track and slide the slug out of the way to remove the trampoline. re-install the stud to hold the slug in place during winter storage.

Thanks, That is what I have now. I just purchased (4) anchor plates:

The best thing I have come up with is to use some through bolts for this location....

I have a photo of the bits somewhere.. I will try to drag it out.

The slides have a thread in them for the bolt. Nothing difficult about them except there are 3 short ones and 1 long one. Your local machine shop should be able to help you "manufacture" these

Thanks again, but the slugs is not what I'm refering to.

I'm begining to think the anchor plates are not a very popular item, I'm sure they didn't come stock on an 18 until very late in production... mid 90's..

Look at page 3 of the .pdf file:

http://2010.archive.hobiecat.com/suppor ... _Wings.pdf

This plate will completely cover the track opening and it is designed to be riveted on....

Daredevil,
The catalogue is not very specific about those anchors....
The ones you bought were for the SX wings, although they will work for the Magnums, if you want. They are not really essential, if you keep your Hobie well maintained.

As you know, the order is - Mount the slugs in the tramp slots, screw in the studs, add a thin nylock and secure the stud, (loctite?), add a s/steel washer, then the foot of the wing, then another washer, then the final nylock. Alignment is key.

If you race or wish to remove the wings frequently, that's all you need do.
If your installation is 'permanent', they you can add the butterfly things (as in the picture above, thanks Dannesjkold) which help stabilize the studs and prevent any possible movement. It has been said that some people forget to routinely check the 'tightness' of the studs/locknuts, and that the studs can then 'move'. The SX anchor plates will also provide that stability, however it means drilling into the cross bar and riveting......your choice.

WOW !!!

Thanks again to all that have contributed to this thread. I should be lounging down the lake on my newly installed wings by the weekend.
