Replaced the standing rigging. The new ones seem a bit shorter, perhaps the old ones had stretched some? My question is: without buying an expensive gauge that measures this stuff how do I know how tight is too tight?

I rig mine with my fiance pulling kn the trap wire, say 100lbs pulling down on it. When i run my spinnaker i put 300lbsthe on the wires and pull the stays all the way to the bottom of the asjuster.

put on a trapeze harness... clip into the trap line... let your butt hang, and tighten up the rig.... need not be piano wire tight, and not sloppy loose... but somewhere in the middle that you like... then sail around a while...

throw a notebook in your sailbox, or preprint some notecards so it's easy for you to note mast rake, rig holes, etc... and what the wind/waves/weight were...

next time you go out, glance over the notecard... and if sailing conditions are the same and you liked how it sailed... leave the rig alone... OR change it up and see if you like it better.

cheers and congrats on a great boat.

Interesting about the set up.

I sail neither tight nor loose on side stays.... The spreaders are also not too tight.

Even with sails +20 odd years old, I presently beat all others including those with new pentex sails.

I am however about to upgrade to new pentex sails.. just waiting for some cash to come in.

I too just replaced both my older shrouds and noticed a rather large differnce in the holes on the adjuster plate. About 4 to get the same rig tension

This is not uncommon. Shroud length specs have a tendency to change slightly over the years. Also, if you bought aftermarket shrouds, they could be slightly different from the current Hobie spec. The best bet is to measure your mast rake independent of the holes in the shroud adjuster (i.e. use the main halyard or trap line to determine your mast rake).

As for actual shroud tension, somewhere between snug to slightly loose seems to be good (if those descriptions make any sense). Overtightening the shrouds is unnecessary will impede mast rotation. Having the shrouds too loose will allow the rig to flop around or in extreme cases, allow the mast to pop off the step. Otherwise, it doesn't make a perceptible difference.

I was out last weekend in about 12-15 mph winds The rig seemed tight on the trailor, (In fact I thought it was too tight as the furler seemed to work hard) but on the water on a beam reach the downwind shroud had some slack. My wife said the furler worked fine as we neared the beach. The shrouds seemed tight on the beach so maybe its about right.

The leeward shroud will ALWAYS go slack when sailing upwind or on a reach no matter how tight you make the rig. This is because when you sheet in, pull on downhaul, or trap out, the mast bends which causes the distance between the mast tang and the mast step to get shorter- thus the lee shroud goes slack.

I run my shrouds very tight, all the time, and have never had a problem with mast rotation.

I beloved the "performance manual" says measure three feet up from the deck lip on the shrouds and make a mark then push one shroud in and measure from the mark on each shroud. 77" is loose and 74 " is a tight shroud. Now this is a little fuzzy because my manual is at the other house
