I'm looking at a new pentex flathead main and the sailmaker in Switzerland says he makes one main that fits a 17 and an 18?
I know it won't be racing legal but I thought the foot and trailing edge was quite different?
Interesting website called Forward Sailing

Not to mention the mast stiffnesses & bend characteristics are way different for each boat. I'm sure its possible to make a sail that "fits" on both masts, but does it shape and function properly on both? Highly unlikely. Don't think I'd buy this sail without seeing it first and/or getting an un-biased review of how it works.

From the pictures on their website, it looks like the sail fits the 17 nicely, but not on the 18. The luff of the sail looks as if it needs an extra 6-8 inches to be at the proper down haul height.

srm is correct, the 17 and the 18 masts have different bend characteristics, and I don't think you can properly build a sail for both. I have the feeling that Future Sails designed a sail for the 17 and don't want to put in the time and effort to do a correct sail for the 18.

Personally if I wanted an aftermarket flat top main, I would buy it from Whirlwind sails

I agree. This is 6 inch difference in mast height:
H17 27' 7"
H18 28' 1"

Not so obvious, the sail is smaller than the original H17:
Original 168 ft2
This 152.8 ft2 (14.2 m2)

The material looks like Mylar, not Pentex. Pentex is much less transparent. Looks awesome, am not so sure about durability.

.

Agree.

Thanks all
It's the old story you get what you pay for
Its cheaper than getting a whirlwind one but may not even set properly

If I may point out one little point ....

I believe Hobie Europe uses "All Aluminum" Masts ..... NO COMPTIPS !!!

(Matt Miller please correct me if I'm mistaken ....)

Just about to receive my new fat head square top sail in the next few days.

I was about to use Pentex but have rather opted for something superior, namely Carbon fibre Technora fusion M membrane

I will post some pictures after the weekend

You are correct. Hobie does not use CompTips anywhere but in North America (production here).

Does Hobie cut their H18 sails differently since the comptip?
