The paint may look decent initially, but rarely does it last. You're much better off looking for a boat that already has gelcoat in good condition and simply taking care to maintain the finish. I have boats that are over 20 years old and still have very nice finishes on the original gelcoat. sm |

Yeah my 84 H18 still has the original gel coat. Of course I have made some repairs on the bottom due to beach wear but the gel coat does last. I was born in 83 and my hobie looks better than I do. But you can paint the parts, like the boom rudders and crossbars. Because they are small they are easy to touch up or re-paint after each season. Gel coat is fun to work with, there is an art to gel coat. I gel coat everything with the extra, like pencils bikes tools tables anything with in reach. |

I painted a Hobie 16 with AwlGrip once. It looked really good. I can't tell you how long the paint lasted because after one summer I traded it in on a new 16. I know the old 12 meters were AwlGrip painted and then wet sanded and polished. They however were never pulled up on a sand beach. Someday I will refinish my 18 but it will be with a gelcoat. |
