So after A long disappointing winter of finding out the boat I just bought was a lot worse that I thought let me find out what everyone thinks would be a fair price to repair these hulls......

turns out both hulls are exactly the same. the bad spots are in the exact same spot

I have a job that will keep me away for almost all next month so what does everyone think would be a fair price to do the fiberglass repair work and maybe do the repainting/gelcoating

On to my next question There is a hobie 17 for really cheap here and I was thinking about buying it for parts as I have the old castings and the old plastic rudders. Does anyone see a problem with getting it for these parts?

O my. How is the rest of the boat? Sails, standing rigging, rudder system?

Have you considered buying old hulls? I would think you could get a pair for $500 to $600, IF the rest of the boat is good. But it may not be worth the investment.

The question is also whether you have someone near you that can repair them correctly or not. If I had to repair these in CA I would scrap the hulls and keep the rest of the good parts and put towards another set of hulls. These boats are out there you just have to look. (sorry guys, just MHO) Just in the last 8 months I purchased two sets of hulls. One for $300 and the other for $500. One set was the best set of hulls I have ever come across and they were 30 years old.

Most likely there are other soft spots as well and you could be chasing this thing for some time and $$$$$$$.

Reboot and find something you can sail in the spring. The $$ you will put into this could go toward some clean hulls and many years of enjoyment instead of worry, work and time not on the water.

For your future reference, my experience has shown me that the yellow and blue hulls of the 70's and 80's do not stand up well compared to the white ones of the same era. (blue ones were the worst). Your yellow hulls show more beach wear than delam issues but my point is still valid. These boats are old and the white hulls must have not been effected by the heat as much as the other colors.

The good part about this is.............you know what to look for next time. :D

Those issues are relatively easy to fix, but in the end, it's perfume on a pig.

You can probably buy a newer set of used hulls for the cost of what it would take to repair those.

Got lucky today and found what we thought was a 17 by the picture on Criags. Turned out to be a 18 with good hulls and all the upgrades I needed for 600 bucks.
Now just a bottom job and fill some deep scratches along the hulls and I will have a pretty good 18 on the water.

So what does everyone recommend to fill gelcoat scratches with?
