Post subject:  Need trailer dimensions for Hobie 18

I am rebuilding a Hobie 18 which has no trailer. I have the trailer cross bars with rollers as well as the mast support. To locate a trailer I need to know essentials:
1. wheel size
2. distance from tounge to rear of trailer.
3. distance outside the two wheel well fenders.
4. distance between the front and rear cross bars with rollers.
5. distance outside trailer frame from side to side.
6. height of wheel well fenders above trailer frame.
7. any other measurement you deam critical.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Christian

I appreciate all the help! thanks!

This is going to vary by trailer, but here are the dimensions for my Trailex.

1. Wheel size – 12”
2. Tongue to rear cross bar – about 17’ 10”
3. Outside fender to outside fender – 5’9”
4. Distance between front and rear cross bars – 8’
5. Frame width – 4’6”
6. Height of fenders above frame – only about 2”
7. Cross bars are mounted below frame

Hope that helps. The trailer is still up on blocks for the winter (boat is suspended from the rafters in my garage) so it only took a second to grab a tape and walk outside.

Also ...

Most of the trailers constructed currently use a 60" wide axle .... that means from centerline to centerline of the tires the distance is exactly 60" wide ...

Note: I have one trailer that does have a 54" wide axle on it ..... I think it was origonally a ol' Nacra 5.0 trailer ... which had a 8' wide beam vs the newwer beach cats at 8'6" wide .....

The overall trailer length to provide the proper support to the boat usually needs to be slightly longer then the overall length of the boat ... so a 18' boat should be on a trailer 20'-22' long, so as to have enough tongue length to make a 90* turn w/o denting the rear quarter panel of the tow vehicle w/ the bows .... and not have a large rear overhang (that maybe illegal in some areas ....)

How do you trailer a cat that is 8'6" wide, I think the legal limit in Ca is 8' on the highway.
Do they tilt them or something, or what?

Yes, the max trailerable widths WAS 8' at one time .... then it was increased to 8'6" a number of years ago (late 70's ?).... then more recently the max "roadable" width was increased again to 10' wide, w/ NO permits req'd but you need to have "WIDE LOAD" placards. I think the most recent change was driven by federal law/ICC which supercides state laws when it comes to the transportation reg's. (Same thing happened for "right turn on red" .... "state alcohol drinking age limits" ... etc
