Post subject:  Telo Cat and Hobie Brand Wind Vane Furler Campatibility
Hello, I recently ordered a standard Hobie Wind Vane Part#CM7703. I already have a furler adaptor. However, upon closer inspection, I see my adaptor has square-shaped openings, I believe for an older "Telo Cat-style" vane I found in my sailbox (I have the stick but no vane or tacking arms). Will the standard Hobie vane work with the square hole adaptor? Thank you.

Even' Brian,

Does your furleing adapter look like Hobie P/N CM7705??? Or is it a piece of metal ... shaped like a "gull wing" w/ square holes in it??? Take that telocat "stick" you found in your trailer box ... you'll find that it is a square shaped stick ... that should match the adapter mounted on your furler ... install it from the bottom ==> up.

If thats fits order reference: 2011 Hobie Parts Catalog, PG 16 P/N 378 ... (order extra's since people like to break them off when they duck under the bridles, on their lifejackets, collars ... etc.

Now the Hobie Bridle Fly that you ordered is what I use as a "MAST HEAD" Wind Indicater ... order replacement vanes because when you flip, it the mast tip hits bottom you'll most likely bend the stalk and lose the vane. But if you don't when you get righted it will be fine ... a "feather" type windvane will just "droop" when it gets wet and be useless. Note that you'll need to bend the stalk straight .... I adapted/modified P/N CM7705 so that I could mount it at my mast tip on the comptip ....

Note: It is common that the metal clip (w/ the square holes) breaks or sometimes the Telocat just falls out .... and then .... KA-PLUNK ... it's gone ($30.00 !!!). So, I drilled a hole through the "stick" at the end ... I install a clevis ring through it (after I install the Telocat on the boat), and I tie a piece of "small stuff/line" through the ring and around the bridle wire. This way no matter what happens ... it's still attached to the boat and I still have "beer" money vs having to buy a new telocat ... ( ... and don't ask how many telocats I've lost over the years ... before I copied this idea from another Div11 "racer" ...)

Hi Harry, here are some photos of the adaptor I have along with the remnants of the (Telo cat?) vane I had in sail box. Also note how the adaptor is installed with the black plastic piece sitting on the furler housing. Is this the correct orientation? Worst case - Rather than ordering another (round) furler adaptor to fit the Hobie-style vane, perhaps I can use the red Hobie vane on my old square stick?

Spend the extra couple bucks and get a replacement telocat (you may be able to buy just the vane). They are infinitely better than those cheap red bridle flys which are basically worthless in any kind of real breeze.

Thanks. Looks like I can purchase just the Telocat vane for ~$9. Just don't tell my lovely wife about the other one. :lol:

Brian,

Yep, you got the correct adapter for a Telocat ... not the Hobie windvane .... just buy the replacement vane ... I think Murrays Marine carries all the spare pieces needed to rebuild a telocat completely. Drill out the screw and use a #6 or #8 machine screw to assemble the rebuilt Telocat ... I see that it already has a clevis ring in the end of the Telocat ... just tie a small piece of batten string between that ring and the bridle wire ... so if the bracket breaks you still have the Telocat.

I usually have one good Telocat /boat w/ a back-up. I have two boats ... so that means (4) telocats (since each boat needs a slightly differently configuired Telocat) .... plus a new spare in the box ... and new replacement vanes ....

Please note what I use the "Hobie Windvane" for as referenced above ... in light air ... a mast head windvane is ... "PRICELESS" ...

For those experienced with the telo cat, what angle do you set the indicators at?
My has the option of 60,90,or120 degrees.

Where can I find a furler adapter for a Telo Cat vane for the Hobie 18? Or are those no longer made and I'm going to have to make one?

Contact your dealer. It's listed in the Hobie Parts Catalogue as Part# CM7705.
