Can someone clarify something for me. Why does the H18 have more sail area than the H18SX? I was explaining why I liked my SX better than my old H18 and they caught the discrepancy on the FAQ page. |

Probably a typo. The SX mast is longer & the boom is the same size, so I don't see how the main could be smaller. Also, the SX jib is larger. sm |

what is the area of the standard H18 jib? the standard H18 main? would be nice to know that as well. |

Has anybody tried running the larger SX jib on a standard H18? Is this even possible without relocating the tang (maybe by shortening the upper forestay and lengthening the lower one)? |

You need the SX forestay, and remove the short pigtail 16 inch or so mini-forestay, just connect the swivel and halyard pulley to the 'hound' or whatever you call that thing... here's a pic of that, scroll down a bit... http://www.osyc.com/index.php?module=Co ... iew&pid=22 |

Sails aren't a perfect triangle, so a taller mast and the same size boom doesn't necessarily mean more sail area. The overall shape of the two sails must be different. |

still can't figure out the individual sail areas John, the figures are combined for each version. we do know the SX has a larger jib and taller mast. |

I will try this weekend.... I'll rig a 18SE and an 18SX side by side and take pictures.... I suspect that both Main and Jib of the SX are taller and skinnier, the SE sails likely have more 'belly' to them. Maybe I can get to measure too, if it's dry enough to lay out the sails. Remember too, the 18SE was in production for likely 8 - 10 years before they 'invented' the SX...and my guess is that a 1978 designed boat had 'fuller' sails. Matt B or Matt M....you guys were around then....share with us your thoughts on the evolution of sail shape on the 18. I also think it is WHERE the sail has more power...higher up? must run |

without owning a SX, I'd agree with you John that it is a higher aspect sail, with more area higher up. |

By "hound", are you referring to the mast tang that the mini forestay gets shackled to on a standard 18? If yes, I might seriously consider upgrading to an SX-size jib next time. I really enjoyed looking through the photos on your site. Looks like you have an excellent club there with more than a few H18s! |

Yes, mast tang... never can remember that thing. I put pix of the SX stock sail vs the SX squaretop from Whirlwind over at the beachcats.com here: http://www.thebeachcats.com/pictures/?g2_itemId=83205 Now... I had that squaretop cut to fit a standard H18 mast...so sometime I'll take pix again comparing my shorter squaretop w/a standard H18 sail. cheers, Rob. Took some pictures of an old SE sail laid on top of an old SX sail.... weird...the SX looks both wider and taller.... Have asked others to post the pictures. |

John Lunn (technically challenged man that he is  ) asked me to share these photos, which show his 1981 standard H18 mainsail laid out directly on top of his SX mainsail. As you can see, his SX sail is not only taller, but also larger through the entire length of the leech.....
