Post subject:  Trailering the H18 mast

I have an old Hobie 18 trailer and the cradle I use for the mast on the back at the cross point of the trampoline is awful, I have to retie it at least two or three times per trip to the coast.

Any suggestions where to get a better, more reliable solution for traveling my boat mast?

I bought one of these and love it. Yeah it was expensive but it's awesome.

Hobie Dude has the right mast carrier. It keeps the mast weight and movement independent of the boat. Mine is the same but home made.

agree...get the mast off the rear crossbar...you want to carry it on the TRAILER if you can..most of us make our own...that murrays unit is pretty much what I built...but if you have no time or shop skills $149 isn't the end of the world....my rear mast stand is made out of aluminum scrap I got at a re-cycling yard several years ago...that's still the best place to start, but the price of scrap has jumped so much you might just want to buy, and be done with it.

To be honest for me I'd rather spend the time sailing then the time in the shop building a mast crutch. Either way good luck have fun!

I made one out of a 6" PVC coupler. Dremeled one end to fit the crossbar and the other to the mast. To hold in place I put a hole on one side and an old fairlead on the other. Ran a bungie through the hole and put a clip on the other end to hook onto the fairlead.
