I have a 83 18. My problem is that I have to replace the cleat at the bottom of the mast. You thread the main halyard through it and through the cleat. The cleat is plastic, and no longer grabs. Does anyone have any idea what this is called so I can order a new one?

A picture would help, but I think you are talking about the cleat that is used for stock downhaul system. Part#10262000 downaul cleat. The main halyard is not cleated off. The main is hooked at the top of the mast and the halyard is loose at that point. Most skippers usually coil it up and stuff it in the tramp pocket. Have fun, Jim.

I met with the previous owner and asked him what that cleat was. He explained that it was for the spinnaker.

There are two cleats shown in the picture, a horn cleat and a pivoting exit block (cam cleat). Neither of those cleats are stock, and as the previous poster stated, you don't cleat off the main halyard, you use the hook and ring at the top of the mast to hold the main sail up.

My guess is that the previous owner didn't understand how the hook and ring are supposed to work and simply used one of those cleats to secure the halyard.
