Post subject:  Furler Inspection

I was doing some equipment inspection before our next big race, and noticed this hairline crack in the yoke of the jib furler. This is the part of the furler that the bridle wires connect to and which transfers all the forestay loads through the furler and to the bridles. As you can see in the pic, the crack goes almost half way down the yoke. No doubt a failure of this part would result in a dismasting.

The crack was very hard to find because it was hidden behind the wind vane bracket and also because there was some surface rust in the corners of the yoke. In order to inspect, you may need to first clean off any surface rust with stainless steel wool and/or a stainless steel wire brush. While you're at it, you may want to do a complete servicing of the furler.

Good catch! :o I'm sailing tomorrow if mine's not cracked. Would be good to know if any one else has this failure on our old boats.

This furler is from a 1985 boat, and it's seen a lot of use. I know a couple years ago, one of our local racers had a furler failure. I didn't take a look at what broke on his boat, but my guess would be it was in this same spot. The steel is bent and welded in this spot, so probably potential for stress concentration and also a place for corrosion to develop. The rest of the furler looks very robust and I hadn't ever heard of any failures before his.

This also provided a good opportunity for me to fully disassemble, inspect, and service the furler, since I'd never actually taken one apart before. In addition to replacing the yoke, I'm going to get new upper and lower bushings. Everything else is in good shape, just needed to be wire brushed and lubed. Not bad considering it was over 25 years of maintenance free service.

The repair is quick and can take approx 20 minutes for all sides.

See if you can get it too someone for TIG welding

Nah, I'd rather just pay the $22 for a replacement part (and in fact, I already ordered a new piece). Since the new one will likely last at least another 20 years, I don't see any reason to mess around with trying to repair the broken one.

The crack was hidden by the Wind Vane bracket....I am looking to fix a wind vane to my fore stay but was not aware there existed a bracket to fix this to the furler. Can somebody pass me the info conc. this bracket ?
